Discover beautifully designed outdoor wellness spaces created to support relaxation, recovery, and everyday wellbeing. From luxury garden saunas and hot tubs to cold plunge pools and spa-inspired landscaping, explore expert-led inspiration for transforming gardens into restorative retreats.

The case for investing in your outdoor space

A well-conceived garden wellness space — whether that is a beautifully positioned sauna, a cold plunge paired with a thermal circuit, or a full garden spa — changes how you live. It changes your mornings, your evenings, and how you recover. Used properly, it changes your health.

What is Garden Wellness?

The idea is simple: that a well-designed outdoor space can do more than look beautiful. It can actively improve how you feel, how you recover, and how you live.

Garden wellness is the practice of bringing purposeful health and restoration into the outdoor environment. It draws on traditions that are centuries old — the Finnish sauna, the Nordic cold plunge, the Japanese practice of immersion in nature — and brings them into a contemporary domestic context. The result is a growing category of outdoor features that are as considered in their design as any room in the house, and rather more significant in their effect on daily life.

At its most straightforward, garden wellness might mean a single outdoor sauna, used each evening as a ritual of unwinding. At its most ambitious, it describes a complete outdoor spa — a sequence of spaces moving from heat to cold to rest, landscaped and designed to create a private wellness destination. Between those two points sits a wide range of products: hot tubs, cold plunge pools, hydrotherapy spaces, infrared heating systems, and swimming pools. Each serves a different purpose. Each repays a considered approach to buying.

Why it is growing now

Interest in garden wellness has accelerated considerably since 2020, driven by a convergence of factors that are unlikely to reverse. Time spent at home increased. Awareness of the relationship between physical health and mental wellbeing deepened. And the evidence base underpinning practices like regular sauna bathing and cold-water immersion became significantly more mainstream — not as fringe wellness but as robustly evidenced clinical practice.

At the same time, the products available have improved markedly. Outdoor saunas have moved from basic timber barrels to architecturally considered garden buildings. Cold plunge technology has made year-round cold-water practice viable at home. Natural swimming pools have introduced an extraordinary aesthetic alternative to conventional pools. Infrared heating has made outdoor living genuinely comfortable through autumn and into winter. The category has, in short, grown up.

The six categories of garden wellness

This guide covers six distinct product areas. Each has a different character, a different investment level, and a different relationship with daily life:

Outdoor saunas provide dry or steam heat for regular thermal wellness practice. They are among the most consistently used of all garden wellness products, with a strong evidence base for cardiovascular and sleep benefits. Available from modest barrel designs to bespoke garden buildings.

Hot tubs combine heat and hydrotherapy jets in a social format that suits couples, families, and those who entertain. The most widely owned garden wellness product in the UK — and the one with the widest quality spectrum.

Cold plunge pools provide the cold-water element of the thermal contrast circuit. Increasingly popular as evidence for cold-water immersion benefits has strengthened. Available as ambient or chilled units; the latter required for serious year-round practice.

Garden spa spaces are not a single product but a designed experience — combining heat, cold, rest, shelter, and landscaping into a cohesive wellness environment. The highest expression of the garden wellness category.

Swimming pools are the most ambitious and the most substantial investment in this guide. For the right household, in the right garden, they transform your life.

Outdoor infrared heating is the most accessible entry point: a system that extends the usable season of any terrace or pergola by months, and that changes how a garden is used from the day it is installed.

What distinguishes a considered investment

The most satisfying garden wellness spaces share certain qualities regardless of budget.

They are positioned with care — close to the house, accessible in all weathers, private, and sheltered.

They are specified to quality — with insulation, materials, and equipment chosen for longevity and performance rather than headline price. And they are designed as part of the garden rather than placed within it: the setting and the landscaping are as considered as the product itself.

The Questions That Matter

Ten questions worth working through before any final decision.

  1. What experience are you designing for?  The most productive starting point is not a product but a practice. What do you want this to feel like — each day, each week, across the seasons? The product that answers that question is the right one.

  2. How does it integrate into daily life?  The products used most consistently are those that create the least friction: close to the house, simple to operate, available in all weathers. A sauna requires a timer and proximity; a hot tub requires a clear path and a cover lifter; a cold plunge requires discipline. Consider what each demands of you, honestly.

  3. Have you accounted for the true cost?  Capital investment, plus installation, plus base preparation, plus electrics, plus ongoing servicing, running costs, water chemistry, insurance, and landscaping. Add 15–20% contingency. This is the honest number.

  4. Have you verified the planning position?  Most garden wellness products fall within Permitted Development. Some do not. Establishing this takes an hour; resolving it retrospectively can take considerably longer and cost considerably more.

  5. Do you have comparable quotations?  Three quotes, genuinely like-for-like — including base preparation, electrics, delivery, and commissioning. The cheapest quotation is rarely the best investment.

  6. Have you assessed the product in real conditions?  A showroom is an imperfect environment in which to evaluate a product that will be used outdoors, in all weathers, for years. Ask for references from owners of 2+ years. For a hot tub, insist on a wet test. For a sauna, visit an installed example. The evidence of real ownership is more reliable than any brochure.

  7. What is the after-sales relationship?  Who services the product? How close are they? How quickly do they respond? The quality of the after-sales relationship is the most reliable predictor of long-term satisfaction. Ask specifically before you buy.

  8. Does the supplier have a UK service presence?  An online-only retailer without local engineering capacity may be appropriate for certain straightforward products. For anything with moving parts, chemistry, or a refrigeration unit, the proximity and responsiveness of service matters.

  9. Have you designed the setting?  A product in an unconsidered setting is rarely as satisfying as one in a setting designed for it. Privacy, shelter, surface quality, lighting, and the approach from the house all affect the daily experience. The setting is worth designing, not improvising.

  10. Are you buying to quality?  Every category in this guide has a quality threshold below which ownership becomes a frustration. The ongoing costs of ownership — servicing, running costs, maintenance — are broadly similar across the price range. The experience, the reliability, and the longevity are not.

Do you need planning permission?

You should always checks the specifics of your proposals with your local council.

For the majority of garden wellness products — hot tubs, saunas, cold plunge pools, infrared heating — planning permission is not usually required, provided the installation meets the conditions of Permitted Development rights. These are the conditions that apply in England:

  • The structure is single-storey

  • If positioned within 2m of a boundary, it is no higher than 2.5m to the eaves

  • It covers less than 50% of the original garden area

  • It is not positioned forward of the principal elevation of the house

Swimming pools and more extensive garden spa enclosures are more nuanced. An in-ground pool typically qualifies as Permitted Development; a substantial garden room or pool house built alongside it may not. Establish the planning position at the design stage, before any work is commissioned.

Planning Permission vs Building Regulations

These are frequently conflated, and they are entirely separate.

Planning permission determines whether a development is acceptable in land use terms and what impact it has on the surrounding area — it is granted by the Local Planning Authority.

Building Regulations set the technical standards that construction must meet: structural integrity, electrical safety, drainage, energy efficiency — they are administered by Building Control. All electrical work, regardless of whether planning permission was required, must comply with Building Regulations and be notified to Building Control.

The installation process
  1. Define the brief  Before approaching any supplier, be clear on what you want, where it will sit, and what outcome you are looking for. This clarity makes like-for-like quotations possible and saves considerable time.

  2. Establish the planning position  Use the Planning Portal or speak to your local authority’s duty planning officer before committing to a design. For significant projects, a planning consultant is worthwhile.

  3. Obtain three quotations  Ensure they are genuinely comparable — base preparation, electrical supply, delivery, and commissioning should all be included. A quotation that omits these is not a true price.

  4. Arrange base preparation  Almost every product in this guide requires a solid, level, load-bearing base. Agree with clarity who is responsible for this and ensure it is completed before the main product arrives.

  5. Commission the electrical supply  Reputable electricians are typically booked four to six weeks in advance. Instruct yours early. All electrical work must be Part P compliant.

  6. Installation and commissioning  Insist on a full commissioning walkthrough at handover. Do not sign off any installation before you understand how to operate and maintain it.

  7. Documentation  Retain the Electrical Installation Certificate, warranty documentation, and operational manuals. These are relevant for insurance purposes and will be required by any future purchaser of the property.
