Why Infrared Heating Deserves Serious Consideration

Outdoor infrared heating is the product with the most immediate effect on how a garden is used. A well-specified system on a covered terrace or beneath a pergola extends the outdoor season by four to six months — making spring and autumn evenings as usable as summer, and turning a January evening into something genuinely pleasant.

The distinction between infrared and conventional gas heating matters more outdoors than most buyers realise. Gas patio heaters warm the air. Any breeze disperses that warm air immediately, and the effect is largely lost. Infrared heaters warm objects and people directly — in the same way sunlight does — regardless of air movement. The result is genuine warmth, even on an evening with a light breeze.

What works in Infrared's favour

  • Immediate, full heat from the moment it is switched on

  • Effective even in a breeze, where gas heaters are not

  • No refuelling, no emissions at point of use

  • Extends the usable outdoor season by four to six months

  • Smart controls allow zone management and significant energy efficiency

  • Minimal maintenance requirements over the product life

What Deserves Careful Thought

  • Requires an electrical supply — multiple units need a dedicated circuit

  • Premium designs cost considerably more than entry-level alternatives

  • Not effective in a fully exposed, open garden setting

  • Dimmer compatibility must be verified before purchase

  • Quality and durability vary significantly across brands

  • Mounting height affects coverage — professional advice is worthwhile

Different types of Infrared heating

Short-wave (halogen): Intense, immediate heat with a visible orange glow. Excellent for open terraces and al fresco dining. The visible element can feel intrusive in spaces where ambience is a priority.

Long-wave (far-infrared): Gentler, with no visible glow, producing warmth that feels closer to natural sunlight. The more considered choice for wellness applications, spa surrounds, and any space where atmosphere is as important as heat output.

Medium-wave: A practical middle ground — faster than far-infrared, less visually intrusive than short-wave. A reasonable choice for mixed-use covered spaces.

Calculating what you need

A single 2kW infrared heater provides comfortable coverage of approximately 10–15m² in a covered outdoor space.

Calculate by area, not by unit count. Multiple units on a large pergola or terrace will require a dedicated electrical circuit — four 2kW units draw 8kW, requiring a minimum 40A supply.

Plan the electrical installation before selecting heaters, not as an afterthought.

Investment guide

Investment range: £500–£12,000+ installed. Running cost is typically £0.40–£0.60 per hour per 2kW unit. Planning permission is not required. Installation takes hours to a day. Most suited to any covered terrace, pergola, or garden room.

  • Single wall or ceiling-mounted heater, entry level: £150–£500

  • Single premium heater (design-led brands): £500–£2,500

  • Full pergola or terrace system: £2,000–£12,000+

  • Electrical installation: £300–£1,500

  • Running cost per hour (2kW unit): £0.40–£0.60

Specifications to verify

  • IP rating: minimum IP65 for covered outdoor use, IP67+ for fully exposed positions. An indoor-rated heater installed outside is both a safety risk and a warranty issue.

  • Dimmer compatibility: not all dimmers are compatible with all infrared heater types. Confirm this specifically before purchasing — an incompatible dimmer will destroy the heater.

  • Brand and service support: established European brands (Herschel, Burda, Infralia) carry UK distribution and the ability to replace elements when needed.
