The physiological benefits of cold immersion are well-evidenced at 10–15°C. Below 10°C, immersion time should be limited to two minutes or less until the practice is well-established. There is no evidence that colder is more beneficial — and meaningful additional risk. 10–15°C is the considered practitioner’s range.
Ambient units: Rely on naturally low UK temperatures to maintain cold water. Effective from October through April. In summer months the water will approach ambient temperature and the product becomes, in effect, an outdoor bath. For year-round practice, this is not sufficient.
Chilled units: A refrigeration unit — integrated or separate — maintains the water at a consistent temperature regardless of season. This is the right specification for any serious cold-water practice. The additional capital cost and modest electricity running cost are justified by the consistency of the experience.

Cold-water immersion is appropriate for healthy adults who approach it progressively. It is contraindicated without medical advice for anyone with cardiovascular disease, significant hypertension, arrhythmia, Raynaud’s disease, or during pregnancy. The cold shock response — an involuntary gasp and increase in heart rate and blood pressure on immersion — is real and can be significant. The practice should never be undertaken alone, particularly in the early stages.

Water depth: shoulder immersion (minimum 90cm of water depth) is the meaningful specification. Some barrel designs are considerably shallower. Confirm before purchasing.

IP rating: outdoor installation requires minimum IP65. Fully exposed positions require IP67+. Many products designed for indoor studio use do not meet this standard.

Filtration: cold water does not inhibit bacterial growth. UV-C, ozone, or saltwater sanitation is appropriate. Manual chemical dosing alone is not.

Material: stainless steel is the most durable for outdoor use. Reinforced PVC is viable but degrades faster under UV exposure.
