Why Hot Tubs deserve serious consideration

The hot tub occupies the social heart of garden wellness. It is where time is spent together — with a partner at the end of the day, with family, with guests — in a way that other garden features do not replicate. The combination of heat, buoyancy, and hydrotherapy jets is also genuinely therapeutic: muscle tension, joint discomfort, and the particular stress of a demanding week all respond to it.

The honest qualification is this: the hot tub category has a wider quality spectrum than almost anything else in this guide. At the upper end, a well-insulated, properly specified tub from a reputable manufacturer is a pleasure to own, costs a reasonable amount to run, and lasts many years. At the lower end, a poorly insulated or poorly made tub can cost significantly more to run than a well-made one costs to buy, develop persistent water chemistry problems, and become a source of ongoing frustration within a few years of purchase. The decision about where on that spectrum to buy is the most important one in this category.

What works in Hot Tubs favour

  • The most sociable of all garden wellness products

  • Deeply enjoyable year-round, and arguably most so in winter

  • Genuine hydrotherapy benefits for musculature and joints

  • Straightforward to install once the base and supply are in place

  • Available across a wide range of sizes and configurations

  • Can be used daily with minimal preparation time

What deserves careful thought

  • Water chemistry requires consistent attention — two to three times per week

  • A poorly insulated tub can be significantly more expensive to run

  • Requires a properly reinforced base capable of 2,000–2,500kg

  • Full drain and refill required every three to four months

  • Needs a dedicated 32A electrical supply, installed by a qualified electrician

  • Poor-specification models depreciate quickly and may not hold their value

What Distinguishes a Quality Hot Tub Purchase

Shell construction: Quality tubs use cast acrylic at 6mm or more, backed with fibreglass reinforcement and structural foam. Inferior models use vacuum-formed acrylic, which flexes under load and eventually cracks. Ask directly how the shell is constructed.

Insulation: The single most important factor for running cost. Full foam insulation — where foam fills the entire cabinet space — substantially outperforms perimeter insulation in UK temperatures. A full-foam tub typically costs £50–80 per month to run. A poorly insulated one can cost three times that.

Pump and jet quality: Jet count is a marketing figure. What matters is the pump-to-jet ratio and the placement of jets relative to the body. A wet test — getting into the tub with the jets running — is the only reliable way to assess this.

Water care systems: Ozone generators, UV-C sterilisation, or saltwater chlorination all substantially reduce the chemical management burden compared to manual dosing. The convenience difference in daily ownership is significant.

Hot Tub Investment Guide

Investment range: £3,500–£25,000+ installed. A well-insulated model typically costs £50–£150 per month to run. Planning permission is not typically required. Installation takes one to two days once the base is prepared. Most suited to couples, families, and those who entertain outdoors.

  • Rotomoulded shell, portable, entry level, 2–4 person: £3,500–£6,000

  • Acrylic shell, 4–6 person, quality specification: £6,000–£15,000

  • Premium acrylic, 6–8 person, full specification: £15,000–£25,000+

  • Reinforced base (concrete slab): £800–£3,000

  • Dedicated electrical supply: £500–£1,500

  • Monthly running cost (well-insulated): £50–£120

Before installing a Hot Tub:
What to Arrange

Before committing to any hot tub purchase, insist on a wet test — immersing in the tub with the jets running. The difference between a well-specified and a poorly specified jet system is immediately apparent in the water in a way it simply is not from a brochure or a static showroom display. Any established retailer will facilitate this. An unwillingness to do so is informative.

  • A reinforced concrete base capable of bearing 2,000–2,500kg (a standard patio slab is typically insufficient)

  • A dedicated 32A, 240V supply with RCD protection, run in armoured cable by a Part P-registered electrician

  • Clear access from street to installation point — measure gate widths before delivery is booked

  • Considered siting for privacy — sight lines from neighbouring properties and upper windows should be resolved at this stage, not after installation
